Newberry County Proposal Supplants Property Taxes

Video Poker Machine

Newberry County resident Sam Martin brought before Newberry county council a proposal to reinstate the use of video poker machines in that county as a means to offset property taxes.  The initiative has stirred up controversy with the county’s residents and to a lesser extent, the state.

Video poker was outlawed in the state of South Carolina in 1999 and all the machines have since been rounded up and placed in storage or sold.  In some cases businesses or residents have been caught using the poker machines illegally since the institution of the ban.  Mr. Martin’s proposal fell flat on its face before he even brought it to council because of this blanket ban.  Even if the Newberry county council were to have passed it the state law would have superseded it anyway.

The proposal is still set to go to polls and there are some very favorable views on the subject and its projection.
